Top 10 U.S. Counties Seeing Growth!

From 2022 through 2023 roughly sixty percent of more than 3,100 counties across the United States grew according to estimates made by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is an increase from the 52% of counties that experienced growth from 2021 to 2022.

Lauren Bowers, chief of the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Branch stated, “domestic migration patterns are changing showing increased impact on counties across the U.S.”. Bowers pointed out areas that experience the highest levels of domestic movement outward happened predominantly during the pandemic in places like the Midwest and Northeast, are now seeing an inversion of more population growth.

This was the first time since 2020 that some Midwest counties saw a growth in population versus losses according to the bureau. While the Northeast saw more population loss than it gained, a total of 105 counties saw a population increase in 2023 improving for 85 counties in 2022.

Counties in the West had the lowest share of natural decrease, or death, with 53.7% of its 449 counties experiencing more deaths than births. Maine experienced a natural decrease from 2022 to 2023, as did most counties in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. Over 1,000 counties throughout the U.S. saw a higher birth rate than death rate in 2023, including 25 of the 30 counties in Alaska and 17 of 21 in New Jersey.

The following are the top counties that saw the greatest percentage of growth in 2023 listed by the United States Census Bureau. Interestingly enough all counties are located in the South, and more than half are in a single state. The following list begins with the lowest and ends with the highest increase.
