2025 Predictions On How To Be Seen In Today’s Job Market

KEY ISSUES

  • 2025 is bringing new barriers to entry for those recently completing higher education
  • How remote work will be seen and replaced in 2025
  • Are cover letter relevant anymore in today’s job pool
  • Experience over education
  • Networking is and will always be king
  • Internal promotions and lateral moves take over hiring

The oncoming job market in 2025 I looking like it will be the liveliest that we have seen in recent years. Kicking off the new year we need to begin to make sense of key trends that will be guiding most new hires moving forward. These opinions will be a little turbulent but stick with us. Launching into what the most important details are, we aim to provide some insight into placing yourself into a stable role.

Remote work will become obsolete

With Covid in the rearview, companies have realized that productivity of associates in the building is higher. While some businesses will still provide remote, or even hybrid, most companies are rolling back this perk. In-office positions or hybrid (1 or 2 days remote) are becoming the norm again. I would suggest if you’re currently working from anywhere you wish and have this ability to work remote, stick with it. It will take an additional effort because you will need to produce statistical results showing that your ability to remain productive. If you are in the market for a position with this perk, just know you’re in a large candidate pool. If you’re willing, make sure to express your interest in working hybrid to show your flexibility. This small detail will show employers you are still willing to be physically present in 2025 (Forbes).

Cover letters are officially out

Cover letter have officially met their match in 2025. These are a rapidly declining hiring document of the past. In review, 58% of the sample study from Forbes showed that cover letter are unneeded when applying. Recruiters are becoming increasingly more focused on tangible work experience and productivity numbers than a piece of paper expressing interest. Tech and design are leading the way for industries that are straying away from cover letter and more focused on numbers. The official response, ditch the cover letter all together and boast a resume with statistical productivity numbers to show your contribution to a business’ success.

Experience is now proving more beneficial than schooling

Long gone are the days where employers put weight more on test scores and big-name institutions. We are now seeing that employers are putting more weight on experience. Especially in new fields that have exploded in popularity such as AI, machine learning, and software development. Hands-on experience, whether working in the field, successfully shown projects, or have relevant trainings are becoming popular. Many roles do not require education or degree if you have substantial experience. Forbes showed that 4 in 5 employers now prefer hands-on experience when grading candidates. If you’re considering a new job in technology, you should prioritize skill building and online educational courses. Freelance work or internships are also proving beneficial to gain experience. Even side projects and personal portfolios are being considered these days to make an impact on your resume (Forbes).

Word of mouth and internal hiring

‘Word-of-mouth’ and your network are becoming more beneficial each day. Companies are continuing to make their hiring process more seamless with internal recommendations and promotions. Businesses are becoming more and more astute of their current associate’s growth and tapping their existing talent for new roles. The internal networking and lateral movement is becoming increasingly more important when seeking higher compensation. Connect interdepartmentally, be willing to work and learn, and offer help when needed. Do not be afraid to ask questions and show your willingness to learn new skills. LinkedIn referrals are also gaining traction, so make sure to update your profile and make sure it aligns with your goals.

Fewer layoffs resulting in more hiring freezes

In 2025 we’re going to see that unemployment pool remain stagnant. Where we will experience more movement than normal is organizations installing hiring freezes rather than laying someone off. Being prepared for this shift will help you improve your chances in other areas providing time to improve your skills. Enhancing your skills is a great way to get noticed because companies will still need talent in the future once the freeze is lifted. This is also where, again, the downtime will help you complete new certifications and skills and take charge of your career. Hone your skills while building your network, embrace the new trends and make sure to position yourself in areas where your dream job can find you.
